August Full Moon Wisdom + Creative Ritual

Early on August 26th, the full Moon in Aquarius and Satabisha nakshatra arrives. At 05:55 am MT, the Moon will be at it its fullest and most luminous. This is a particularly potent full Moon, supporting healing, opening and divine clarity for your path. On the other side of three eclipses and a Kala Sarpa yoga, the coming cycle supports new possibility for healing and awakening.

Sun in its own sign of Leo sits on the Eastern horizon at the time of the full Moon, ushering in light, empowerment and strength for the cycle ahead. Ask the ancestors to support you in the coming days, as they will be the ones granting you blessings and ushering you forward. The Moon receives gaze from Jupiter at this time of the full Moon as well, gifting us with a sense of expansion and a readiness to open up to new nourishment. Saturn also gazes at the Moon offering restriction and steadiness. Together, these dynamics of expansion and contraction, provide balance and evenness. Honor these needs in the coming weeks. Seek steady steps, be consistent and allow yourself to receive the flow of resources arriving.

The full Moon in Aquarius is a reminder to seek integration and balance with opening and closing. A dual ruled air sign, both Saturn and Rahu provide a sense of duality and contradiction here. Aquarius correlates to the 11th house of gains, however, gains come when we allow for losses. In other words, without letting go and supporting the release process, there isn't space to acquire or receive the gains arriving. Pluses and minuses must be honored in the cycle ahead. There will be losses and inevitable letting go. Just remember you are making space for the new.

What do you need for deeper nourishment? Are you making space for what you need? What losses do you need to attend to and grieve? What gains do you need to celebrate and honor?

Satabisha nakshatra is a powerful constellation of healing. This full Moon brings an important junction point to our journey of change and transformation. Varuna is the ruling deity of this portion of the sky. He rules Natural Law and sustains it through seeing everything- dishing out consequences for that which goes against the highest Laws of the Universe. Said to have "thousands of eyes", Varuna sees all actions, choices and behaviors. This gives him great wisdom, and allows him to be a great healer as well- as he can eradicate the root cause of disease. Sometimes Varuna is considered the king of kings for this reason as he rules over Natural Law, Universal Law, or Rta. Lakshmi and Soma are Varuna's children. Both offer the blessings, healing gifts and miracles that are required to transform the disdain and displeasure of Varuna's watchful gaze.

This full Moon is an excellent beginning and fresh start- especially for healing purposes. Disease that begins under Satabisha is extremely difficult to heal, so being extra diligent with routine, diet and life style choices are nonnegotiable in the cycle ahead. This is an excellent time to start your fall cleanse, follow Ayurvedic guidelines more closely, get more rest, exercise and meditate regularly. Use self care in the days ahead and hit reset. If you've been falling far away from a healthy routine and choices, now is the time to reel it back in and realign with more structure for building immunity and inner strength. The cure for the critical gaze of this constellation is increasing nourishment, resources, support and vitality. This comes from simplicity, ease and gentleness- not force or punishment. Let this be a reminder for your healing actions and choices as you realign with your inner truth and inner knowing.

The symbol of Satabisha is a drum or a circle, which reminds us of the healing power of this constellation, as well as containment and boundaries. There is inner and outer, self and other, inside and out. The sacred drum keeps time, supports our alignment with the universal rhythm and helps call us home to our own heart beat. Use the coming cycle to recommit to yourself, your own drum beat. Keep life simple, steady and slow. Find your pulse, find your rhythm. Let nature and her wisdom support your realignment.

Where do you need to simplify and reconnect with your own inner knowing? Where are you getting lost, erratic and creating difficulty? What challenges are asking you to look more closely and reevaluate your choices and actions? How is your inner critic keeping you from the nourishment you seek?

Use the coming cycle to come home to yourself and set the intention of healing your body, mind, emotions and spirit. Ask for guidance and seek out new resources where you see holes in your support team. Honoring your inner wisdom and truth is dharma. There is no other path.

Creative Ritual

Most people think of Jyotish Astrology as a means of charting the planets, the stars, the movements of the heavens. For those of us who subscribe to this very ancient body of Vedic knowledge though, we understand that there is a correlation between the cosmos and our own inner nature, our experience of life. There is a connection between the macrocosm and the microcosm, the two are not separate, but dance, mingle and co-create. This divine interplay is what makes studying Jyotish so valuable.

Self Tracking, Learning from the Wisdom of the Body

1) Sit, stand or lay down. Close your eyes and fall into the rhythm of your breath. Notice the rise and fall of your chest, the waves of breath moving in and out of your body. Take some time to relax into this rhythm.

2) As the body moves to greater stillness and relaxation through breath awareness, locate a sensation in the body. This sensation might show up as a tingling, a pulsing, or a sense of vibration. There might even be a color, a shape, a sound or a word that arrives in connection to the body part. Listen and honor whatever arrives for you. Don't filter the messages, judge or critique them. Your only job is to listen right now.

Be curious, be interested, and be present to the body's messages. What body part emerges?

What sensations are arriving? What messages are shared?

Take note of this wisdom coming to you from your body.

3) Create an image of this physical body sensation that arrived through your self tracking. Use craypas or paint and put your experience on paper- so as to transfer the felt senses into a tangible, visual expression. This is a powerful part of the process and one that can shift us into deeper awareness of our body wisdom.

4) Once your image is complete, give it a title. Now, let it speak.

What does your image have to share with you? If your image could speak, what would it say?

5) Pull out your Jyotish chart. What body part emerged in your self tracking exploration? What house of the chart is connected to this body part? Study this house within your chart. What do you notice? Use this to help you identify the houses.

We can analyze the experience of the house by noting:

What planets are sitting there, if any? What sign is located in this house? Do any planets give their drishti (gaze)? Finally, note the current transits and what planets might be effecting this house currently.

Your body is sharing with you a very specific message. This message is directly connected to your needs, your desires, your deep longing for nourishment, comfort, safety and support on some core level. When we can access the wisdom of the body directly, we get very clear, unfiltered messages and insights.

The cosmic intelligence of the jyotish chart can then help us further identify what is impacting us both macrocosmically and microcosmically. This is the vital information we need for deepening our healing and transformation process.

Why Western Astrology is Inaccurate.

8/14/2018

Picture

As a Vedic Astrologer, one of the most common questions I hear is:

What is Vedic Astrology? How is it different from "regular" astrology?

Most Westerners don't even know there is more accurate form of astrology and they have no idea that Eastern astrology, or Vedic Astrology, predates the Western approach to astrological interpretation. Some people truly don't care that they are ingesting cosmic misrepresentations and half truths.

Even more surprising to me is the fact that many Westerners who study yoga fail to deepen their knowledge of the Vedic Limbs- which includes a branch called Jyotish, or Vedic Astrology. Every branch of the Vedas contains resources for awakening, or enlightenment. Vedic astrology, or Jyotish, is a powerful resource for increasing the light of awareness, jyoti.

Many people who learn the differences between Western and Eastern astrology, realize that they have studied false information for years. Western, or Tropical astrology, simply put, is highly inaccurate. Yet it predominates as the mainstream understanding of astrology in the West. As surprising as this is, it speaks volumes about Westerncentric interpretations of knowledge and wisdom.

The depth, layers and ancient lineage of jyotish astrology are incomparable. Simply put, the West has nothing like it. But there are even more glaring differences between Jyotish (or Sidereal astrology) and Tropical (or Western astrology).

There are two ways of measuring the zodiac- a Tropical approach and a Sidereal approach. The different measurements are an important distinction to understand. The Sidereal zodiac is based on the fixed sky, the stars- which do not move.  Whereas the Tropical zodiac is based on the moveable, unfixed sky, and uses the constantly changing vernal equinox for its measurements.

Besides the metaphoric differences of a fixed vs. unfixed zodiac, there is an even more  important difference that determines the fate of accuracy. The Eastern Sidereal system is astronomically accurate because it uses the Sun's position in relation to the skies. Planetary movement is tracked against the fixed position of the stars- which honors astral positions accurately.

The Western Tropical zodiac is based on the relationship of the Sun to the Earth. It tracks planetary movement from the view point of the Earth, and tracks the planets from seasonal points, like spring time and the equinox.

The differences between these two zodiacs sounds fine in theory, however, it creates an unfortunate problem when calculating the starting point of the zodiac. Where the zodiac begins is crucial for constructing an accurate chart. Accuracy must be based on the reality of what is happening in the skies. Both systems agree there are twelve signs, but because a difference has emerged in the starting point of the zodiac, the Sidereal zodiac and the Tropical zodiacs no longer align. The ancient Vedic astrologers understood the differences in these two zodiacs and chose not to use a Tropical approach because they knew it wasn't accurate.

Tropical astrology marks the beginning of its zodiac from the seasonal point, or vernal equinox. However due to complex astronomical shifts taking place, the point of the vernal equinox changes slightly every year at a rate of about one degree every 72 years. Over the last several hundred years, the starting point of the astrological year has changed as a result. The Sidereal system takes this shift into consideration, however, the Tropical system does not. As a result, there is now roughly a 24 degree discrepancy between starting points of the Tropical and Sidereal zodiacs.

Tropical astrology doesn't take into consideration the slight but consistent shift taking place annually between our earthly position in relation to the Sun. Over hundreds of years, this 24 degree shift has slowly been taking place and the starting point of the seasons (or equinox) has continued to change as well. Eventually this difference will become so large that Western astrology will become obsolete and will no longer have any relevance. Currently there is little to no connection between the Tropical zodiac and what is happening astronomically in the skies.

Eastern astrology on the contrary is astronomically accurate because it is consistently taking into consideration the current placement of the Sun in relation to the skies. It is therefor an accurate expression of what is happening cosmically from the vantage point of the sky and star patterns, or constellations. The consistent and slow shift in seasons, our relationship to the Sun, and the placement of the planets in relation to the stars, is all utilized in order to create a true expression of the cosmos.

The starting point of the zodiac is important for an accurate chart to be pulled. After hundreds of years, Western astrology is still calling Aries the starting point of the zodiac and uses the same start date every year- even though it is no longer relevant. But due to the slow and steady astronomical shifts taking place, Aries is actually not an accurate starting point any more. The 24 degree shift (which continues to widen) is accounted for in Eastern calculations. Currently, according to Sidereal calculations, the zodiac begins at about six degrees Pisces.

Besides the way the charts are cast, the differences between Eastern and Western astrology are vast. The depth, layers, intention, philosophy, as well as the spiritual and dharmic clarity of Vedic astrology, far surpasses anything that Western astrology can offer- hands down.

New Moon Eclipse Portal Wisdom + Creative Ritual

8/7/2018

Picture

After a month long eclipse cycle with back to back eclipses, we gain some closure with this third and final solar eclipse on August 11th. If you haven't already experienced some sense of finale, look for resolution and closure after multiple weeks of intense emotional upheaval and shadow coming to light. Often you will notice resolution leading up to the eclipse or shortly thereafter. Part of this eclipse cycle has provoked confronting big challenges, inner and outer changes and an emotional intensity. Expect some softening and ease arriving as the dust settles.

The August new Moon occurs on the 11th at 03:58 am MT while Moon is in sidereal Cancer and Ashlesha nakshatra. Rahu is currently transiting Cancer, which inspires a certain intensity with all things Cancer. Heart, home, mother, emotional body, lungs, chest and land are receiving more focus right now. The feminine in general is front and center. Rahu is forcing the shadowed parts of the feminine to emerge more fully and discomfort with challenging emotions has intensified for many. You may have noticed that this eclipse portal has brought to light more emotional tenacity, grief and forced the feminine to be witnessed and acknowledged in new ways. Expect more of this theme during the new Moon and in the waxing cycle to come.

As the new Moon cycle arrives, nourishment, money and resources ask for your attention and intention. The pull will be towards greater nourishment in the weeks ahead, encouraging a focus on being fed, supported and comforted. What are you eating- physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually? How nourished do you feel by what you are ingesting? What is working well? What is missing?

Sarpa is the ruling deity of Ashlesha nakshatra. He brings an occult, mystical experience with him- which can also be deceptive and illusory. His snake energy penetrates deeply and likes to go well beyond the surface understanding of life and existence. Sarpa energy is bold, intoxicating and transformational. Transcendence and awakening are inevitable. How do you go about inciting this change? Sarpa reminds us that from darkness, comes great wisdom- if we are willing to go beyond the mundane, surface understanding. The opulence of awakening is yours when you are taking into consideration the many layers of your power and shadow.

Once the Moon enters Cancer and shifts to the inside of Rahu on August 10th, we enter a two week cycle where all planets will be hemmed in, encompassed by the nodes Rahu and Ketu, similar to a Kala Sarpa Yoga. Rahu, Sun, retrograde Mercury and Moon transit Cancer. Venus is currently debilitated in Virgo while Jupiter continues through Libra. Retrograde Saturn moves through Sagittarius and retrograde Mars and Ketu transit Capricorn. Currently we have three retrograde planets to contend with and two debilitated planets (exalted Mars is currently retrograde, rendering him debilitated). Take this into consideration during this two week cycle, ending on August 24th. This is the grande finale of the month-long eclipse portal.

Mars, Saturn and Mercury are asking us to retrace our steps, seek new insights and get new results. With all planets hemmed in by the nodes, this tends to intensify results, awakening deep transformation and jump start renewal. Think: shedding of ones skin. The snake energy of Sarpa allows us to shed, release, transform, grow and move beyond. The result of so much confronting and identifying of the shadow recently is culminating in deconstruction of the ego identity. In this process of release and letting go, a grief process is inevitable. How are you honoring your grief as you transform and step into the new? Use the coming two weeks to honor the letting go, the grief and heartache. Create space for what you truly want and need. Who are you becoming?

How are you supporting your transformation, healing and change process? How are you resisting, sabotaging and derailing your progress, momentum and awakening? Where are you choosing to stay in the darkness? Where might you need more resources, support and guidance?

As Moon moves from Cancer into Capricorn over the course of the next two weeks, he touches each of the nine planets of the zodiac. Remember that the Moon illuminates, highlights and mirrors whatever it comes into contact with. Our emotional body (the Moon) expresses to us what is emerging. This is a powerful time to lean closer to the emotional body and listen carefully. Your body wisdom will be sharing insights with you. Your emotions will carry the key insights for your deeper needs. Don't bypass or negate your emotional body wisdom- or you will miss the depth and clarity. Moon moves towards Ketu in this cycle, exiting the tail of the serpent as this unusual cycle ends. Expect a cracking open of illusion, awakening us to new possibilities and options. Look for new growth, room for the new, renewal and deeper awareness about your needs and desires.

Eclipse Portal Wisdom

Three eclipses take place over the span of a month, occurring back to back. The July New Moon in Gemini arrives with a Partial Solar Eclipse, marking the opening of this shadowed portal. The Full Moon in Capricorn on July 27th takes place with a full Lunar Eclipse. Usually, eclipses come in pairs, however this eclipse cycle brings a third eclipse with the new Moon in Cancer on August 11th. A partial Solar Eclipse closes the portal and will support a rich harvest with depth and insights.

There is an interesting theme with this eclipse portal. The Gemini new Moon in Punarvasu Nakshatra creates an opening for deeper nourishment to be confronted. What is missing in your support team? Where are you feeling depleted or malnourished? This new Moon will provoke challenges with disconnection to rise to the surface. The desire to be whole, more balanced and unified within self and life increases.

Mid eclipse cycle, the full Moon in Capricorn and Sravana nakshatra will ask you to refine and take steps towards dharma- that which sustains and supports you and your inner awareness. The deconstruction of old patterns and belief systems that are standing in your way must be allowed to crumble and release. You will feel the fullness of what does not serve you. What do you want to replace this old, outmoded way of being? What resources and behaviors can support more harmony, ease and gentleness in your life?

Closing this eclipse portal will be a partial solar eclipse and a new Moon in Cancer and Ashlesha Nakshatra. If you've been hiding behind false pretenses, this will be a time of unmasking and clarifying the changes that must take place. This particular closure will force you to identify your trust issues- inner and outer. Where are you hiding behind ego and avoiding your deeper knowing? In what ways are you pretending to feel safe, without actually acknowledging your fears?

You may remember that the first solar eclipse of the year on January 31st was also in Ashlesha nakshatra. What did you learn and confront in the previous eclipse cycle? This is an opportunity for you to retrace your steps and revisit any unfinished business with Sarpa, the serpent of transformation.

This eclipse cycle is an opportunity to spiral up and awaken from your slumber! Step into your power by identifying and confronting your shadows, illusions and stories. There is great potential in the coming month to release the past, the undigested thoughts and stories clogging your body wisdom. As you clear and let go of these shadowed parts, there is space for moving forward in more empowered, courageous ways. First, you must be willing to awaken from your negligence, laziness and illusion. The more courage you step into, the more you will succeed!

Remember that solar eclipses awaken masculine parts of ourselves and help us confront ego based iterations of self, ideologies and belief systems. There will be deconstruction and forced awareness rising to the surface. The purpose of lunar eclipses is to support the confrontation of the shadowed feminine, identifying emotional body blockages and disconnections within receptivity. Solar and lunar eclipses always come in pairs, thus supporting confrontation and release of both masculine and feminine, the ultimate polarities of existence. The result of confronting the shadow is to create more conscious awareness of our unconscious self. With more consciousness, the grip of these illusions lessens, allowing us to create new possibilities- and ultimately make vastly different choices.

As we enter this eclipse portal, notice the themes and challenges you have been confronting recently. What is intensifying? What is forcing you to look? What stories, experiences and relationships are encouraging you to look more closely? Continue to dig in and lean closer. Ask for support, resources and guidance so you aren't walking alone.

The partial solar eclipse occurs on August 11th at 02:02 am MT, ending at 05:30am MT. The maximum eclipse will be at 03:46am MT. This eclipse will not be visible in North America but will be visible in North/East Europe, North/West Asia, North in North America, Atlantic, Arctic.

From a Vedic perspective, it is not advised to be outside during an eclipse or to look directly at the eclipse. Wear a head covering if you have to be outside so you don't absorb the shadow. Ideally, this is a time for spiritual practices such as meditation, chanting and fasting. Set intentions and honor the sensitivity of this time. It is also widely recognized that during and between eclipses, starting new endeavors will not bring positive results. No new projects, relationships or activities should start in the eclipse portal. Notice what needs are arriving, then take action after the eclipse portal closes. Best to lay low, attend to spiritual pursuits, get extra rest and work with your inner shadow very consciously during this cycle.

Creative Ritual

1) Using craypas, paints or pencils, create an image of your nourishment. What does nourishment feel like for you? Create an image that expresses this feeling using colors, textures and shapes. Allow 20 minutes at minimum for this nourishment image. Title your image.

2) Use your image to inspire a movement exploration. Let your body move in response to your nourishment image with an intention of "moving with your feelings of nourishment". What sensations emerge for you during your dance? What awareness? Allow 5 to 10 minutes for this movement exploration. I encourage you to extend this time frame as you recycle this process.

3) Harvesting. In your journal answer these questions:

I am, I want, I need, I sense, I feel, I imagine.

What deeply nourishes me? What no longer nourishes me?
Where do I feel support in my life? Where do I need more support?
What am I opening to? What am I closing to?
